Writing Prompts: Swords, Genocide and Suns, Oh My!

Ah yes, welcome to my first official writing prompt post! I’m actually quite excited about this because, well… it’s new, fresh and I’ve never done one before! Also, if you follow me on Instagram, then you’ll already have seen these! Oh the perks!

Anyway, for these prompts I wanted to do ones that weren’t just fantasy (of course, there just HAD to be a sword in there) but also some that could work for a modern setting or even tailored to whatever your little heart desires! What I’ll do is post the photos I’ve created (CANVA!!!! The obsession continues) and then post a few directions you could go! Oh the fun to be had!

Writing Prompt #1

Okay! Writing Prompt #1, I know, start out with a fantasy type one, right? Maybe, but as they say, “It’s whatcha do with it!” Here’s a few different directions you could head out on!

  • Pulling the sword from the stone actually turns out to be the only thing keeping the demons at bay, immediately, they flood the area, killing the crowd while you and the sword are whisked away to safety.
  • The sword is the speaker, and turns out to be Death’s sword before he turned to the scythe and reaping of souls. Now, he’s coming for you.
  • The speaker is a representative of the reigning monarch, and now that the sword has been returned to its rightful bloodline, the heir is to return. War is upon them.
  • As a teen on a school trip to a museum, you’ve pulled the sword from the stone, the speaker is the keeper of the sword and the crowd thinks it’s all an act but it’s not, and the speaker hangs his head. “It’s yours now boy, all of this.” He nods and turns to dust before their eyes.

Right, I could keep going, but I’d get carried away with fantasy ideas for that one. NEXT!

Writing Prompt #2

Oh man! Writing Prompt #2 sounds exciting and versatile, let’s see what I can cook up!

  • Wild West: You came here hunting a man who has been killing everyone in town after town before you arrive and this time you were expecting to be one step ahead of him as everyone was alive when you arrived. Only problem is, the shells at your feet tell a different story.
  • Fantasy: (Classic) It’s the first night since the big wolf hunt that there was a full moon. You only got scratched, but one of the other guys was bitten… could this be his doing?
  • Modern: The government arrives and puts the whole town under quarantine but has no idea what to do with you and they can’t understand why you’re not dead. Turns out, you’re immune to their secret new weapon, and after billions of dollars in research and collateral damage, you’re a thorn in their side.
  • Sci-Fi: Mars had never felt as lonely as it did now, it seemed someone sabotaged the oxygen supply. The question was who, and how and why are you alive?

Hmm, I’ll stop at four again, sounds like a nice even number… NEXT!

Writing Prompt #3.png

Writing Prompt #3! Oh the ramification of this type of event, I almost want to make it happen in my current work in progress… but nah!

  • Fantasy: Half the world is ever night, and sometimes completely cloaked in darkness as the moon still rotates around the world. An ancient evil is stirring beneath the ocean away from the sun, but only shielded from the sun can it rise again. What can be done to fix it?
  • Sci-Fi: Using a weapon to stop the world’s rotation, a number of nations suddenly become super powers off their energy exports to the lands in darkness until a specially trained task force infiltrate them in an attempt to figure out how to get the world moving again.
  • Fantasy: The sun is being channelled by a necromancer who is attempting to resurrect a city that was mercilessly razed to the ground in an attempt to extinguish all of his kind. Who will stop him?
  • Sci-Fi: The world has stopped spinning, and as the sun grows larger in the sky, heat intensifies. Scientists around the world realise that we are out of orbit and are being dragged inward toward the sun. How can they manage to get out of this one?

Well, that was actually just as much fun for me as I hope it’s going to be for you! If you decide to use any of these, please let me know as I’d love to read it! Oh, and if it becomes a novel, I’ll post this here: I don’t want anything from it! Well, actually a signed book would be sweet and if there’s a movie a special ticket to the premiere would be nice! But that’s it! One can dream can’t they?

Keep me posted, but in the meantime, keep on writing!

Drop me a line, wait for my reply!
