A Song of Ice and Fire

My original post was going to be the beginning of a story I came up with while in the shower but after spending the past hour reading theories and histories of Game of Thrones I decided that enough was enough. This post is about to get all kinds of crazy, so please grab your tin foil hats and follow along!

One of my favorite things about George R. R. Martin’s books is just how much lore precedes the novels and leads us to theories about lineage and alignments, prophesies and fables and character motives and goals. Part of me wants to dive DEEP into reddit, but I feel as though that’s a bit too down the rabbit hole for me. That being said, I have my own insane theories about characters and the future of the novels (or maybe how I would like to see it go down).

First, I must warn… I am going to spoil so many things if you’re not entirely up to date on the show as well as the books. Admittedly, I’m extremely rusty on the books, but hopefully not too far off. Are you still with me? Tin foil hat on? Good.

The legitimisation of Jon Snow, King in the North.

So at the end of the episode ten for season six, Jon Snow had managed to narrowly avoid defeat at the hands of the Spartan Bolton army. His deed of chasing down, nearly beating Ramsay to death and allowing Sansa her revenge put him in one of the only remaining Stark’s good graces. Not sure if she can, but in my mind, it would be smart for her to legitimise Jon Snow as Jon Stark in her father’s words, “There must always be a Stark at Winterfell”. Sure, those words weren’t said to her, but if she marries (again) by her own choosing, she’ll likely take her lord’s name. She doesn’t know Bran’s alive (although her pessimistic outlook on Rickon’s return probably means she’ll consider the reality) so for her to legitimise Jon would put a male Stark at Winterfell and someone who is well respected at the wall and below.

Littlefinger’s Murder.

Sansa is now playing the game. Now that she has more control than ever, she isn’t going to let that go. Littlefinger isn’t exactly shying away from what he wants, but that is his weakness. Sansa’s experience with Ramsay would have taught her a thing or two about underestimating someone and how cruel people can be. The smartest thing she could do is kill him and make a play for the Vale. She’s already met the sickly Robin, so she can use that to her advantage to not only strengthen the ties in the north but also strengthen her own position. As Robin is a bit simple, it’s not like she would have to worry about him taking control and she already has the sympathy of some leaders in the Vale from her time there. I really think Sansa will rebuke his advances and when he attempts to force himself upon her, he will find himself on the pointy end of a knife. Good riddance.

Tommen, Kevan and Cersei’s Deaths.

Verys just disappeared on a ship bound for somewhere. Personally, I don’t think he’s very happy with the joining of the Faith and the Crown, despite the stability this may bring to the realm. I think he needs chaos to lay the seeds for Daenerys to arrive. Kevan might not be the greatest Hand of the King ever known, but he’s bringing about a stability with a dangerous alliance. I think Kevan will be assassinated and Tommen may get caught in the crossfire. Or dragonfire. One or the other. Either way, as per Cersei’s prophecy, she will come to watch Tommen die. This will break her and she will attempt to light the city with wildfire. Something tells me that Jamie will be forced to make the same choice he did when Aerys made the same call to “Burn them all”. Personally I hope me makes that choice again, however his obsession with her may lead to Daenerys’s vision of the ruins of the throne room. Perhaps she arrives too late and Jamie flees the city instead of saving it.

The Dragon has three heads.

As much as we’ve all had fun speculating that Jon and Tyrion are both half Targaryen and want to see three dragonriders, I don’t think this is the case. The dragon has its three heads in the dragons themselves. This does tie into my theory for Jon (see above) as he has an important enough story for bringing the north together. As Daenerys builds her army of ex-slaves, Dothraki and people willing to fight for her she won’t have much trouble taking the Iron Throne, which Jon has zero interest in. His interests lie with what is beyond the wall, so he’s not going to interfere, and I suspect he will bend the knee to the new Queen in exchange for her formidable fighting force when it comes time to fight the Whitewalkers. Tyrion will be pivotal to unifying the realms through his own relationships and will be the one to send Jamie back to Casterly Rock to actually settle in with someone besides his sister (especially since I expect him to kill her).

The Final Countdown Battle

Thanks for sticking with me, tin foil hat still on? Good. The final battle should narrow down to the wall crumbling (which probably won’t be this season, good way for next season’s finale to end (Bye Edd, probably gets finished off as the Night King steps through the rubble of the wall). Daenerys will leave Dorne alone as they couldn’t be conquered before but has them ally with her for the battle into the north. The Iron Islands will be returned to the Greyjoys. Theon is going to either die, or watch his sister die (and their lineage along with her, so most likely this option). Arya will arrive back to find her direwolf leading a pack of wolves and they will head to Winterfell. Winterfell begins preparing for the long night and Sansa prepares the Vale (see above theory). With everyone in place, the final battle begins.

Okay, so maybe some (or all) of that is a bit farfetched but it’s just fun to see where certain characters will end up in the show! For the novels, I’m hoping that Tyrion doesn’t replace Ser Barristan as he’s one of my favorite characters (which is why I understand he is already on borrowed time). I just hope GRRM gives him a better death than in a dark alley. Stabbed in the middle of a war? That’s fine, he was getting old. Shivved by some slaver in a dark alley? Please don’t!

Do you agree with any of my above predictions or have some of your own? I’d love to argue discuss them in the comments! Perhaps next post I’ll do up the beginning of that story! I would like to get back into my episodic fiction, it was fun to write!

Drop me a line, wait for my reply!
