Path of a Leaper: Realms of Demons and Men

Exploring the concepts in my story has been interesting to some and good for me as I refresh my memory. I spoke of magic and its two sides last time, but today I am drawing upon a particular group of characters from my novel, known as ‘Leapers’. These characters can travel great distances in a short amount of time and can seemingly teleport as a method of transportation. Falling in with thieves, assassins and other dark groups, the leapers are useful for their ability to infiltrate any building and deliver messages quickly. As with all things, there must be some risk for such a reward.

The risk is run through the actual act of leaping. Leaping requires a mind of two worlds and a connection to both the demon realm and the human one. Much like if you cross your eyes or stare at something out of focus, you see two objects; for leapers, they see two realms. In my story, the Demons and Humans both exist in the same space simultaneously but with little to no ability to communicate or affect one another. However leapers are thought to have demon blood running through their veins, giving them this ability to see both realms. When the world is out of focus, a leaper can see blurry versions of both realms giving them an indication of what exactly they might be leaping into.

Demons have one goal, the destruction of the human race. This may seem narrow minded and petty, but when Death reaps a new soul, that soul is passed upward for judgement. If they are a good person, they are rewarded into the heavens and many decide to take up arms in the path of the watchers. However with no humans, there are no more new recruits and with no more recruits, there is no defence of heaven. In my story the god of death is missing, causing a sudden lack of natural deaths. Without these recruits, the heavens begin to panic and search for the former being who wore death’s mantle. But as demons wish desperately to pass through the human realm and unto heaven, they look for any opportunity to return. Leapers provide exactly that.

Leapers shift from the human realm and into the demon realm simply by fully focusing on one or the other. This in turn opens up a spiritual rift between the two, meaning a human could leap into the demon realm and demons could leap into the human realm if close enough. Also time passes much slower in the human realm than the demon one, which presents leapers with the illusion of teleporting. A leaper may only be gone for ten seconds in the human realm, but could have travelled for ten minutes in the demon one causing them to travel great distances in a short amount of time in the human realm. This still takes its toll on the leaper as they still age at the same rate, however one lost in the demon realm could also avoid a natural death, granting them a kind of immortality as Death only seeks out those in the human realm.

See? Not complicated at all! I would love any and all feedback on this and any questions about it. I know everything in my head and if something doesn’t sound like it makes sense, by all means, poke the holes into it now so I can change it before I attempt to get it published! I’m really looking forward to my next day off this week as I finally have a plan for some of the old notebooks I have lying around. I’m considering converting them into scene books where each page describes the scene, who is in it, why it’s important and the setting. Also I may use a few pages at the start to knock out the characters and their descriptions with some quick notes on their back story. I’ve been really enjoying delving deeper into my ideas and as much as I may not enjoy editing, at least my writing itself is actually getting better!  Anyway, good luck in your writing and wish me luck with mine and all these crazy ideas!
