Day 2: Rereading, Editing and a Milestone

With Pocky in one hand, my hot chocolate filled Thor mug in the other… I enter, THE ROOM.

Okay, it’s not quite that dramatic (I blame the Pocky) but it’s the second of June and I’m sitting back at my makeshift writing desk in my writing chair writing on my writing computer.

Moral of the story? I’m writing.

After nearly a five month break and lack of focus, I seem to be slowly getting back into it. Yesterday’s post, Failure, was a scene from a story idea I’ve had for years. The scene has always stuck in my mind and the Sergeant type character has always been themed into a post apocalyptic world. Actually, a few years ago when a game called Hellgate: London was leading up to release, I thought to myself, Holy crap, I’m not the only one thinking about this world! After playing it, I realised that I was sadly mistaken.

The headspace I’m in currently is one of focus but the problem I’ve been having is creeping back up again. I’m simply too disorganised in my writing methods. For Jefferson & The Magician’s Curse, I smashed out the story in a relatively short amount of time. One point of view character drove the story for the most part until eventually splitting into two halves. The novel was barely planned at all aside from the fact I had set a target of one hundred thousand words. Fun fact? I set that target because at one hundred thousand meters, spaceflight begins. So I was literally aiming for the stars! The other way I planned was to have a massive direction driving event every twenty thousand words.

This new story however has been quite difficult. I’ve been managing more points of view than I’ve ever tried writing before and more plots weaving in and out of each other giving the world a depth I’ve never attempted until now. There is weight to the story and it feels like a living breathing world but as I took a break for nearly half a year… I’ve fallen out of sync with the story and the world. I love the characters and the world (especially since I’m able to tie it into Jefferson, don’t ask how, that comes later) but I feel as though I can give it more detail.

I am quite enjoying rereading it, almost experiencing it for the first time myself and I smile at some clever moments and scenes. I have an issue of two different viewpoints in the first chapter, but both characters are viewpoint characters. The second chapter is written quite well, as is the third. This story came from the amalgamation of many of my differing ideas for stories and despite being science fiction or realistic in their origins, were converted into a single fantasy world.

However I’m reaching out to you writers out there in Blogland, how do you organise your stories? Especially you, yes you Serena, how do you ladies and gents keep yourselves and your stories organised? I’ve already noticed a gaping contradiction (how a character’s mother died) in the first five chapters! I humbly request your advice and if you don’t want to leave it in the comments, my email is available on the right hand side! Help me, guide me and get a special mention if and/or when I get published!

Also a final note, I managed to miss a relatively large milestone for my little corner of the internet here as my blog advises me that I’ve made two hundred posts! It’d be awesome if WordPress also had a total word count… although I’m not sure I’d want to know. Think of the trilogies I could have been writing! Anyway wish me luck and see you again… perhaps sooner rather than later!

Drop me a line, wait for my reply!
